The word “Holi” originates from the Sanskrit word “Holika.”
This story takes place in Satya Yuga, when a great devotee of Lord Vishnu, Prahlad Maharaj, descended on earth with the teachings of pure devotional service, as instructed by his Guru, Srila Narada Muni.
These instructions were given to him while he was still in the womb of his mother, Kayadhu.
In spite of being born into a family of demons, he had unwavering faith in the words of his Guru.
This is the story of the pure devotee Prahlad Maharaj and his demon aunt “Holika”
The Unshakable Faith of Prahlad Maharaj: Triumph Over Tyranny and Fire:-
Hiranyakashipu wanted his son, Prahlad Maharaj, to become the greatest of all demons because, after him, Prahlad would rule the kingdom.
Therefore, he decided to educate him under the guidance of his spiritual master Shukracharya’s sons, Sanda and Amarka. Prahlad Maharaj was never interested in the demons’ education system.
After many days, he returned to his father, Hiranyakashipu. Out of deep affection, Hiranyakashipu placed Prahlad on his lap and asked him what he had been learning in his studies.
Prahlad Maharaj then spoke about the nine limbs of devotional service, such as śravaṇam (hearing) and kīrtanam (chanting).
Along with this, devotees also offer belpatra, flowers, ash and diyas at the Shivling. On this day, devotees stay awake the whole night and chant “Om Namah Shivaya” and also recite many scriptures. However, on this day, Vaishnavas worship Lord Shiva to attain complete love and devotion towards Lord Krishna but not to attain the abode of Lord Shiva.
Hearing this, Hiranyakashipu became extremely angry. He chastised the teachers, Sanda and Amarka, and in his rage, ordered his assistants to kill Prahlad Maharaj. Hiranyakashipu’s assistants attempted to kill Prahlad Maharaj in various ways—they struck him with sharp weapons, trampled him under the feet of elephants, subjected him to hellish conditions, threw him from the peak of a mountain, and tried countless other methods. However, all their attempts failed.
Seeing this, Hiranyakashipu became increasingly fearful of his son and had him arrested. The sons of his spiritual master, Shukracharya, tried to educate Prahlad in their own way, but he refused to accept their teachings. While the teachers were absent from the classroom, Prahlad Maharaj began preaching Krishna consciousness to his classmates. Through his instructions, all his friends—the sons of the demons—became devotees like him.
Holika’s Defeat: How Faith and Devotion Saved Prahlad Maharaj :
After witnessing all this, Hiranyakashipu called upon Holika for help in killing Prahlad Maharaj. Holika had received a boon from Lord Brahma that she would never be harmed by fire. Confident in her protection, she planned to take Prahlad Maharaj into the fire to kill him. On the day of Holi, Holika placed Prahlad Maharaj on her lap and sat in the fire. However, Prahlad Maharaj continued chanting the holy names of the Lord with unwavering faith. As the fire blazed, Holika was burned to ashes, while Prahlad Maharaj remained unharmed.
During the burning process, Holika cried out to Lord Brahma, asking why she was being consumed by the fire despite her boon. In response, Lord Brahma reminded her of the conditions of the boon, which she had forgotten:
1. The boon protected her only if she used it to save herself, but she was misusing it to harm someone else.
2. If she was alone, the fire would not harm her, but if she was with someone else, the protection would not apply.
Ultimately, Prahlad Maharaj was always destined to be saved because Lord Vishnu was protecting him.
As a devotee what we can learn from the above story:
- मारे कृष्ण राखे के , राखे कृष्ण मारे के :
“Whom Krishna wants to save, no one can kill; and whom Krishna wants to kill, no one can save.”
Significance of Burning Holika :
- Overcoming Negative Traits – We should strive to free ourselves from vices, bad habits, immoral behavior, demonic tendencies, and actions that go against God.
- Embracing the Devotion of Prahlad Maharaj – We should adopt the mood of Prahlad Maharaj, learning from his unwavering devotion and faith in Lord Vishnu, even in the most adverse conditions.
